**Check buildings cover for the shed itself and contents cover for the belongings inside.** Before storing valuable bikes or tools there, check the outbuilding theft limit, any per-item limit and the required locks. If those limits are too low, arrange the extra cover before moving the valuables in.

## Separate the structure and its contents

Aviva's explanation distinguishes the shed structure from movable possessions such as tools and furniture. It also notes that garden cover can be limited. Your policy schedule gives the actual limits. ## Collect the documents that answer the question

Have the current policy wording, schedule and any endorsements together. Check that they describe the property and how you use it correctly. Use the document version attached to your cover, rather than assuming a new-customer webpage applies to an older policy.

__Questions to put to your insurer__
| Question | Why it matters |
| --------------------------------------------------------- | ---------------------------------------------------------------------------- |
| Is this structure included in my buildings cover? | The policy's definition and the property's circumstances control the answer. |
| What is the total limit for contents in outbuildings? | Your inventory may exceed a sublimit. |
| Are individual bikes or tools subject to separate limits? | A total contents sum alone may not settle a particular item. |
| What locks, anchors or evidence of entry are required? | The installation and the circumstances of a claim can matter. |
| Which causes of damage and excesses apply? | Theft, storm and accidental damage should not be treated as identical cover. |

## Explain any unusual use

Tell the insurer if the shed will contain business equipment, be used for work, or store particularly valuable items. Ask for confirmation of the relevant wording rather than relying on an assumption that all garden storage is treated alike.

Retain an inventory, photographs and purchase evidence outside the shed. Revisit the questions when the contents or use changes and at renewal. This checklist does not recommend an insurance product or determine whether a claim will be paid.
