# Re-felting a shed roof

Assess the roof and safe access before deciding on DIY.

**Replace failed felt if the roof deck is sound; repair a rotten or sagging deck first.** Pay for competent help when safe access or the roof structure is in doubt. Fresh felt over a failing roof is an expensive way to postpone the same job.

## Decide whether this is a covering job

From a safe position, record the visible damage, leaks and condition of edges and trims. Ask a competent person to investigate sagging, soft or damaged boarding and uncertain roof structure before choosing the covering. HSE advises treating roofs as fragile until a competent person establishes otherwise. [Read HSE roof-work guidance](https://www.hse.gov.uk/construction/safetytopics/roofwork.htm?ref=gardenuplift.com).

If the existing covering is an unidentified older sheet material, do not cut, drill or break it to investigate. Some roofing materials can contain asbestos; seek appropriate identification and handling advice. [HSE’s material guide](https://www.hse.gov.uk/asbestos/location-materials.htm?ref=gardenuplift.com).

## Specify the covering system

Record roof shape, slope, deck material and dimensions of each slope. Ask for the exact felt product, compatible adhesive and fixings, edge and ridge details, and disposal of the removed material to be included in the quote.

IKO provides a specific installation sequence for its Super Shed Felt. Follow the current instructions for the selected product rather than borrowing a lap width or fixing pattern from a different roll. A low-slope or unusual roof may need a different system. [See IKO’s product-specific method](https://ikogroup.co.uk/news-advice/how-to-install-maintain-your-iko-super-shed-felt/?ref=gardenuplift.com).

## Compare repair quotes on the same scope

1. Safe access and protection of the working area.
2. Removal and disposal of the old covering.
3. Inspection of the deck and how extra repairs will be authorised.
4. Named new covering, trims, fixings and workmanship terms.
5. Final inspection and photographs of completed details.

Agree what happens if hidden deck damage is found. That avoids comparing a covering-only quote with one that includes structural repairs. Do not start stripping the roof without a suitable weather and temporary-protection plan.
