How Garden Uplift handles website requests, tool answers and correspondence.

Who is responsible

Kieran Simpson publishes The Garden Uplift and is the controller of personal information used to run it. Contact [email protected], with The Garden Uplift privacy in the subject. This inbox is shared with British Uplift and Cat Standard.

Visiting the website

We use Ghost on Railway for hosting and Cloudflare for delivery, DNS and website security. Serving requests and investigating faults can involve IP addresses, requested URLs, request times, browser information and response status. Our lawful basis is legitimate interests in providing a reliable publication, preventing abuse and resolving faults. We restrict administrative access and do not use request records for personalised advertising.

Calculators and shared links

Calculations run in your browser. Entering answers does not submit a form to us. Choosing the share action adds the answers to the address bar; the link can then be copied. Anyone with that link can read the answers. Loading or reloading a shared link sends its URL, including those answers, to the hosting and delivery services as part of the page request. Your browser history may also retain it. Use measurements and amounts only; do not include personal or confidential details.

Clear answers removes the tool parameters from the current address bar. It does not erase copies of the link already shared or retained elsewhere.

Cookies, preferences and analytics

We do not enable reader analytics, advertising trackers, newsletter registration or installer enquiry forms on this site. Fonts are served locally. When you choose light or dark mode, your browser can store that preference on this device until you change it or clear site data. Staff sign-in uses security and session cookies. Cloudflare may use security mechanisms needed to protect website requests; see its privacy policy.

Affiliate purchase links

Links labelled “paid link” contain a publisher tracking identifier. Following one takes you to the retailer or affiliate service, which may use cookies or similar technologies to attribute a purchase under its own privacy and cookie notices. We do not load an affiliate tracking script or set an affiliate cookie on Garden Uplift. For Amazon links, see Amazon’s privacy notice.

Email and administration

If you email us, the shared Microsoft mailbox receives your address, name if supplied, message, attachments and associated email details. We use these to answer enquiries, check corrections, consider suggestions and handle business or privacy requests. Ordinary correspondence relies on legitimate interests in replying and maintaining accurate editorial records. Information needed for steps you request towards a contract, or to perform it, is handled on the basis of contract. Legal obligation applies where a specific law requires handling or retention.

Sending an enquiry is optional, but we may need contact details to reply. We do not add correspondents to marketing lists. Ghost staff verification email uses Mailgun through the British Uplift sending service; this does not enrol public readers in email services.

Retention

Correspondence is kept while needed to resolve the matter and related follow-up. Longer retention depends on an active business relationship, a relevant correction evidence trail, a complaint or dispute, or an applicable legal record-keeping duty. We review unnecessary personal details when closing a matter. Contact us for a review of information about you; we do not promise automatic mailbox deletion after a fixed number of days.

Ghost application logs rotate daily, keeping ten rotated files alongside the current file. This is a rotation limit, not a guarantee that every copy is erased after ten days. Technical records are used for delivery, troubleshooting and security. Provider retention arrangements apply to their infrastructure records, and relevant extracts may be needed for an ongoing fault, incident or dispute. Restricted backup copies support recovery and may contain staff and editorial records. We review obsolete recovery copies when replacing them; deleting a live record does not instantly delete every backup.

Providers and overseas processing

Railway, Cloudflare, Microsoft and Mailgun process information needed to supply the services described above. Hosting and email processing may take place outside the UK. Their processing terms describe relevant safeguards: Railway, Cloudflare, Microsoft and Mailgun. Railway and Cloudflare's terms include provisions for UK transfers. Contact us for details relevant to your information.

Relevant records may be shared with advisers or authorities when necessary for a legal obligation or claim. We do not sell your contact information. External websites have their own privacy practices.

Your rights

Depending on the circumstances, you can request access, correction, erasure, restriction or a portable copy of your information. Rights have conditions and exceptions; we will explain any that apply. We may need enough information to verify your identity and locate the records. We do not make solely automated decisions about people with legal or similarly significant effects.

Your right to object

You can object to processing based on legitimate interests. Email the address above and explain the processing you want us to review.

Complaints and changes

Contact us about a privacy concern. You can also complain to the Information Commissioner's Office, the UK data protection regulator. We will update this notice when the site's services or information handling change.
