Shed security: locks, hinges and alarms

Build a security plan around contents and insurer requirements.

Secure the door, hinges and valuable contents as a system: a decent lock, sound fixings and a suitable anchor are the starting point. For valuable bikes, choose the storage and locking package around the insurer’s requirements. An impressive padlock is little help on a weak door.

Define what you are protecting

Make an inventory with model numbers, photographs and replacement information. Keep a copy somewhere other than inside the shed. Identify any bicycles, tools or other items that have special insurance conditions before choosing security equipment.

Use Secured by Design’s shed guidance to assess the building and its surroundings. Where a product claims accreditation, check the exact model and package against the relevant scheme rather than treating a brand logo as approval of every product.

Walk through the whole installation

  • Can the gate and approach be secured as intended?
  • Are the door, frame, hinges and fixing points sound?
  • Is the chosen hasp or lock compatible with the building?
  • Does the anchor attach to the specified supporting material?
  • Can you use the locks properly without rearranging stored items?

Have weak or damaged components assessed before adding more hardware. Do not drill a proprietary shed or fit an anchor through its floor until the manufacturer's instructions and the supporting foundation are clear.

Decide what an alarm will actually do

Ask how it is powered, how you will know that its battery or connection has failed, and who can respond to an alert. Test the coverage at the shed's actual location. An app notification and a physical barrier serve different purposes; record both in the plan rather than assuming one replaces the other.

Check cover, then keep records

Aviva distinguishes cover for the building from cover for stored possessions. Your own schedule, exclusions and security conditions determine the answer for your belongings. Read the insurer’s explanation.

After installation, retain the exact lock and anchor details, receipts and any installer confirmation. Review the arrangement when you add a valuable item or change how the shed is used.
